The Economic Effects of Smoking
Smoking is the direct cause of a multitude of diseases and therefore leads to substantial costs inside as well as outside of the health care system. IHS conducted a study on behalf of the Lower Austrian Regional Public Health Insurance measuring these costs for Austria. The study comes to the conclusion that the total costs of smoking amount to 2,4 billion euro or 0,7 percent of the GDP annually. Read the full press statement online.
Economic Effects of Erasmus+
People who go to other countries to study, teach or work increase not only their language skills and knowledge but also their social skills. Furthermore, staying abroad has positive economic effects on the respective countries. The Institute for Advanced studies conducted a study on behalf of the OeAD that measured the economic effects of the 14.000 people that went to Austria in 2014 to study abroad.

TEPSA Pre-Presidency Conference
On the 7th and 8th of June the forum for European integration of research discusses the strategic development of the EU during the Austrian Council Presidency at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) in Vienna.
"Securing borders, internal security, a more integrated European Monetary Union, migration and integration, a strategy for the Western Balkans - these are the big issues that will concern the EU under the Austrias Council Presidency. During the conference we present a series of analyses and recommendations - an invitation for discussion between policy-makers and academia." These are the goals of the TEPSA Pre-Presidency Conference that will be held on 7 and 8 June at the IHS according to Dr. Katrin Auel.

Economic Costs of Chronic Respiratory Diseases
Economic costs of Respiratory Diseases are substantial in Austria
Chronic respiratory diseases are among the most widely spread chronical diseases in the world. The two most frequent are the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Estimates regarding the prevalence of the two diseases in Austria vary between 4 and 10 percent. COPD ist more common in higher age groups, while asthma is more frequent with younger children. A central risk factor for chronic respiratory diseases is smoking - the risk of getting COPD is three times higher for smokers than for non-smokers. Chronic respiratory diseases are not only a burden for the affected, but also bring substantial financial costs for society. The Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) carried out a study to measure the economic costs of chronic respiratory diseases in Austria.
