Figure of the month: 69

Since 2019, the student employment rate has risen from 65% to 69%, with students now working an average of 21 hours per week.

These are the findings of the latest Student Social Survey (SOLA), conducted during the summer semester of 2023 on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research. Compared to other European countries, Austria's student employment rate ranks in the top third.

A quarter of all students now consider themselves “primarily employed” while studying part-time, a growing trend. Financial necessity is the main reason cited, though some students work primarily to gain professional experience rather than out of need. High employment levels, however, can impact academic success. Research shows that even working as little as nine hours per week can create challenges in balancing work and studies and has demonstrable effects.

Apart from part-time programs at Universities of Applied Sciences, many Austrian universities are not adequately prepared to handle this reality. There is an urgent need for strategies and concepts to effectively address these trends.
